Total Greek yogurt advert- Regional Identity

Regional Identity is the identification of a specific geographic region by specific features in a piece of work

Regional Identity can be clarified by many things within a clip.

Firstly it can be identified by the dialogue, in this example the young boy says 'mama' which is obviously shows that the family are from a foreign country. This is then clarifies further into the example as he continues to talk to his mum in another language.

The narrow roads may be suggesting that they are in a small village, also there are no cars meaning that i could be a relaxed place and is set along time ago.

Many things in this clip apply to it being set in a Old Greek farming village. This is shown by the stone walls, old small houses and no roads. Also you can tell that all the people are friendly and helpful due to everyone point the boy in the right direction and the butcher not having nothing to say when the boy takes the cow away form him. Lastly in the advert you can tell that the young boy has a good relationship with cow as he is able to spend a lot of time with it, this implies further that there is nothing else for him to do like use technology.

At the end of the advert there is phone which is the only sign of any technology in the place they are which to me is suggesting that are in present day greece due to the phone however it is still the same as greece has always been due to the stone wall, small roads and small houses.

Shot Types
Firstly there is an establishing shot which shows where the advert in shot, this for me is the first time you get the sense that it may be in a Old Greek town due yo the stone walls and the small house. This then changes to shot reserve shot of the young boy and cow this shows there close relationship as they are able to communicate easily. As the boy is running towards the house , this is the master shot as it shows the limit of the action in the clip. When the boy has got the cow and comes back to his house, there is a close up of the Greek yogurt on the table. This is to make sure this shot is seen as important and therefore is significant in the clip.

Sound Types

At the start of the clip there is rustling which obviously occurs naturally along with the story making this diegetic sound however the viewer cant see where the sound is coming from also making this sound asynchronous. Also when the man rings the bell, this sound is diegetic and synchronous sound as you can see where the sound is coming from. The use of the bell sets the region in a older place they not used very often in new modern places. Lastly at the end of the clip there is a narrators voice which in non-diegetic as it does not occur naturally along with the story.

Mise-en-scene
All of the people in the clip are wearing dull baggy clothes which to me suggest that they are in a poor area, this is also shown in the lack of technology such as old women having to hit the rug to get it dry rather than using a tumble dryer like many people do. Also the fact that the boy is playing with the cow may be suggesting that there are not many children in this area. This could also be showing that it is safe to play far away from his house as the cow is in fields away from the house. All of these aspects relate to a small farming village as you would not find any of these aspects in a busy city.

Overall i think this advert is set in a traditional Greek farming village which has been unchanged however it has increased in some technology like telephones. You can tell that is it a local village and has a small population of people due to everyone being able to know each other.

Powerpoint on How to analyse a TV Drama

Editing

There are different types of editing

Eyeline match
This is when characters look in a certain direction and then the next cut will be a shot of what they see or who they are talking to.

Action match
This is a part of continuity editing where a shot where a shot of a character making an action which is followed by a cut to a shot of them doing the action.

Shot/Reverse shot
This is an editing pattern that cuts to the view in the opposite direction which is commonly used in dialogue when cutting from one character to another. This would be following a master shot to establish where the characters are standing.

Editing in the Doc Martin clip

There are serveral eyeline matches in this clip.
For example when there is the shot of Doc Martin looking dow which then cuts to a shot of the dog looking up at Doc Martin.

Regional Identity in the Doc Martin clip

Regional Identity is what you can learn about the region where the clip is set by looking at things like the dialog of characters, clothing and the set.

The Dialog can can apply a lot about the region for example in the Doc Martin clip one of the workers uses the term 'Bogmin' which is clarified as a local word by Doc Martin not knowing what it means. When the water starts to leak into the room the old worker is very laid back which could mean he is from the country as people are seen to be more relaxed in the country than the city, however Doc Martin becomes stressed which implies that he is not from the country and more likely to be from the city.

The country region is also shown through the two workers accents at the start of the clip and is the most  common accent that we hear, although Doc Martin has upper class town accent which make it obvious that he is not from the region that the scene is set.

The clothes show the region that characters are from for example Doc Martin is wearing a suit which implies that he is from the city which is also shown in his accent as well

Homework

Shot Types in EastEnders clip
In this clip there is a over the shoulder shot to show the Mitchell brothers conversation so that the viewer can see the the characters reactions to the other character talking. Another shot type that is used is extreme close up the show each characters facial expression and focus the viewer on that character. A medium close up is used in the EastEnders clips which is good to show 2 characters and some of the environment they are in. This could also be the master shot as it is where the rest of the action is between the two characters.

A wide shot is used half way through the clip which shows the two characters running away but also make the main focus on the environment as it takes up most of the shot. Lastly there is another extreme close up which makes one characters movements to focus and notifies to the audience that this is an important moment.

Sound Types in EastEnders clip
Here are some examples of Diegetic sounds in this clip

  • Train
  • When the character punches the other character
  • Car Skidding
  • Police Car
  • Footsteps
  • Gun Shot
  • Glass shattering
  • Water Splash when the car hits it
  • Car door shutting
  • Dog Barking
These are all examples if Diegetic sound because they are all part of the story whether they on screen on off screen.

There is one example of Non-diegetic sound which is mood music which is played just as the car is about to hit the water to create an overall dramatic atmosphere.

Here are some examples of Synchronous sound in this clip
  • punching sound
  • car door being shut
  • Car skidding
  • Glass shattering
These are examples of Synchronous sound as they are sound that occur from whats on the screen.

An example of Asynchronous would be the train as it was not actually shown on the screen but the viewer could hear it in the background.

Mise-en-scene
you can see form the arena in the background and the tall buildings that they might be in the city. This could also be shown by the fact that there are lots of cars on the roads and parked. The man the take the car from is wearing a suit which makes he look wealthy and at a good job. Lastly the clothes that the two main characters are wearing indicate that they may be middle glass.

Mise-en-scène

Mise-en-scène is anything that can be suggested from what is in the scene

There are many examples of mise-en-scène in the Doc Martin clip:

  • Dark rooms and Small doors can suggest that they are in a old place, we find out more when we see narrow road and hills in the background as it makes it clearer they are in a village in the country.
  • When Doc Martin writes a prescription in the middle of the street it suggest that where they are is more relaxed in the country
  • You can see that there is no major crime where the scene is set due to police officer having time on his hands to hover.
  • Boxes in the room may be suggesting that Doc Martin has just moved in.

Many features in the clip suggest that its set in a village in the country.

  • Narrow roads
  • No Traffic
  • Breezy
  • Small Houses
  • Hills
  • Dark rooms

Sound in Doc Martin Clip

When Doc Martin is walking the up beat music adds emphasis to the fact that he is walking fast and makes it clear to the audience that he is angry. Also you can hear seagulls in the background which clarifies the area where the scene is set which might be near the sea. Lastly when Doc Martin looks at the woman, the sharp longing sound shows the tension between the two characters.

There are different types of sound:

Diegetic
Diegetic sound is any sound that occurs naturally from the story and plays a part in the storyline. Also the sound can be on or off the scene and still be part of the story.
Examples of diegetic sound from the Doc Martin clip would be things like the phone ringing, placing a cup down, the dog barking and the hover.

Non-diegetic
Non-diegetioc sound is any sound that does not happen within the story like sound effects, mood music and narration
Examples of non-diegetic sound from the Doc Martin clip would be things like the intro music and the music which is played when there is tension between the 2 characters of Doc Martin and the Woman in the School.

Synchronous
Synchronous sound is any sound that occurs from what is happening in the scene and you can see where the sound is coming from.
Examples of synchronous sound from the Doc Martin clip would be things like the car boot being shut and paper being cut as we can see these things happening in the scene

Asynchronous
Asynchronous sound is any sound that occurs off the screen and the viewer can not see where the sound is coming from.
Examples of Asynchronous sound in the Doc Martin clip would be things like the seagulls and people talking as we can not directly see where the sound is coming from.

Shot Types in Doc Martin

At the start of the clip there is a master shot which shows the view where the action is going to take place. Also in this shot each characters status is shown by them being at different heights in the shot which allows the viewer to know who the characters are talking to by there eyes either looking up or down in close ups. There is a Establishing shot of a small village further in the clip which shows the viewer where the scene is set. Lastly a close up is used to show Doc Martins reaction when he sees another character, this then applies to the viewer that there is some tension between these two characters.

Secondary thoughts on Doc Martin clip

My secondary thoughts on the Doc Martin clip are that you can see two sides to Doc Martin. One side is is shown by his fast walking and sharp answers to character and the other side is shown by him helping other characters with what they need. This then gives the audience a sense of Doc Martins personality and how it can change. The music which is played when Doc Martin goes outside changes the atmosphere which was currently in the room.

Initial thoughts on Doc Martin clip

My initial thought on the Doc Martin clip are that from the start of the clip the tension builds due more characters entering the small room which is already flooding water, even having the phone ring at the same time adds to the tension giving this scene a dramatic atmosphere. When Doc martin leaves the room the atmosphere still stays tense which is shown by him walking fast and answering back other characters with short sentences. When Doc Martin speaks rudely to the police officer this emphasises his anger even more.
