Diegetic
This is any sound that naturally occurs from the story whether it is on or off the screen.
Non-diegetic
This is any sound that does not happen naturally and adds to the atmosphere and mood.
Synchronous
This is any sound that occurs from what is happening in the screen and the viewer can see where the sound is coming from.
Asynchronous
This is any sound that occurs off the screen so that the viewer can only hear the sound and not see where it is coming from.
