Class and status can be shown through camera work, mise-en-scene, sound and editing.
When looking at the camera work used in this clip, there are several different camera shots, angles and movements which are able to represent class and status. At the beginning of the clip there is a close up which allows us to see that she is wearing large gold loop earnings, this is something which would stereo typically be associated with the working class. A medium close up introduces us to the other female characters, this shot is representing her to have a low status as she is unable to do anything about the situation as she has no power or control over the male character. A medium shot shows the boy to have a higher status than both girls. This due to him standing up and the girls are on the floor therefore an eye line match is being made which shows the girls looking up at the boy portraying him to be the more dominant character. A medium close up further shows the girls low status as they are seen to be crying which is portraying them as subservient opposed to dominant. A long shot shows a change in status for the young boy. This is due to him being surrounding by police who force him to the ground therefore the police are shown to have the higher status as they are able to control what the boy does. The young boys low status is further shown when he is siting on the floor crying which is showing him to weak rather then powerful. A high angle shot is used when the young girl is lying on the floor dying, this is showing her to have a low status as she lifeless and has been brought down by another character with a higher status.
When looking at the mise-en-scene of this clip, there are several things which are able to represent class and status. Firstly the boy is carrying a gun which portrays him to be from a working class/unemployed background as the are stereotypically more likely to involved with crime. This is also shown through him wearing a hooded jacket which is associated with crime related situations. The realism of characters is shown through them being portrayed as stereotypical teenagers being involved in crime, having bad attitudes and short tempers. This elements can also be seen to portraying these characters as working class. Verisimilitude is seen throughout the clip as a believable storyline is used and is something which can happen in real life however this situation would not necessarily be associated with higher class people therefore this further shows that the characters are more likely to be from a working class/ unemployed background. When looking at the location of the clip, there appeared to be many alley ways and back streets in which the boys was able to run through after he has shot the girl. This would be seen as stereotypical for an estate which is associated with working class/unemployed people. The fact that the boy has a gun, this connotes that he is going to kill someone.
When looking at sound within the clip, there are were several things which were able to represent class and status. The diegetic sound of the girl shouting portrays her to have a lower status as she is obviously scared of the boy as he is more dominant than her. The diegetic sound of police sirens gives the sense of crime which is more so associated with working class areas as they are more prone to crime. The diegetic sound of the vase smashing adds to the tense atmosphere in which is being created within the house, this also shows the leading up to the girl getting shot as the boy is becoming even more angry and short tempered.
Lastly when looking at editing there are several eye line matches which show the characters either looking up or down at each other for example the boy appears to look down at the girl giving him a higher status than her. A shot reverse shot is used during the conversation between the two characters, this allows the audience to see the reaction to one another is saying and also helps keep continuity throughout the clip. Montage editing can be seen to be used in this clip due to its use of straight cuts.

Homework- Tuesday 13th
“Cross-media convergence and synergy are vital processes in the successful marketing of media products to audiences.” To what extent do you agree with this statement in relation to your chosen media area? You must choose to focus on one of the following media areas. You may also refer to other media in your answer. Film - Music - Newspapers - Radio - Magazines - Video games
Synergy is the simultaneous release of different products to boost both. Synergy is used more by bigger companies as they are able to use media conglomerate to promote linked products across different media. Cross media convergence is the combining of two or more mediums. This can either happen in the production, distribution and exhibition stage. Synergy and cross media convergence can be seen a most vital in the marketing stage of a film for many reasons however it is also dependent on the companies budget.
In today’s society we no longer need to buy DVDs as we can download them online or watch them on YouTube. Blu-Ray DVDs carry more features than the original DVD and it can be played on HD TV. The Inbetweeners Movie was released on Blu-Ray which included features and an extended cut. You could also rent the film on 4OD and on LoveFilm. It can be seen that the release of the DVD for ‘The Inbetweeners Movie’ was going to be successful due to the success in the series of The Inbetweeners, this gave an advantage for the company as they knew that their target audience was going to be interested in this new release. This is therefore suggesting that cross media convergence is vital in successful marketing as The Inbetweeners Movie may not have done as well as it did without the TV series coming out first. However due to them being a Independent company they relied heavily on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter where they would be able to communicate with their target audience.
On the other hand when look a big budget film cross media convergence and synergy are used in different way. An example of a good use of cross convergence and synergy is Skyfall. With a high budget of $29 million being spent on production, distribution and exhibition the movie became successful because of its high anticipation within the James Bond fan base. An example of convergence used to advertise this movie is a song by Adele released alongside the film. The song became very popular and created a good awareness of the film. An example of synergy used to advertise Skyfall is releasing an aftershave called 'James Bond 007' and also Sky had a channel dedicated to all the James Bond Movies. This is only possible due to them being a major company.

To what extent does digital distribution affect the marketing and consumption of media products in the media area you have studied? Candidates must focus on one of the following media areas: Film - Music - Newspapers - Radio - Magazines - Video games
Digital distribution affects the marketing and consumption of film in many ways. The meaning of digital distribution is to transfer film digitally, this gives marketing an advantage as they are able to use the digital file to advertise the film on all different levels such as on YouTube, pop-ups,TV and social networking sites such as Facebook however this would not be possible with a reel of film. The consumption of film would be affected as digital files are able to maintain their quality longer than a reel of film and gives audience the choice as to where they want to watch the film as digital files can be consume across many platforms.
When looking at the marketing of a film, digital distribution helps to achieve 360 degree marketing as they are able to keep up with growing technology to advertise their film in the places in where the audiences will see them. For example more people are likely to see a film being advertised on the TV rather than on a poster. This would create a larger audience for for the film as more people would have been aware of the film.Digital distribution affect consumption of film in a way in which audience are able to watch the film in different places such as the cinema, internet and TV. This creates an overall larger audience for the film as more people can access it.
Casestudy
The film Skyfall surrounded the potential audiences with trailers, posters and music from the film in order to advertise the film. This would not have been possible without digital distribution. However on the other hand Fish Tank did not use this type of advertising due to them have a independent british company with a small budget, this was apparent due to the difference in profit between the two films for example Skyfall had a profit of just over one billion dollars whereas Fish Tank only had around three million dollars.
In Ill Manors cross media convergence is used with a sound track being releases before the film was release. This was one of their main ways of marketing the film and they wouldn't have been able to do this without digital distribution.
Disney used synergy to gain more of a profit from a film for example they have the

Representation of Gender
Firstly the representation of gender is shown through Mise-en scene. The costume of the worn by the main female character comes across very masculine as she is wearing trousers and a leather jacket whereas the other female character in the clip is wearing a silk, red dress showing feminine characteristics as she looks classy and expensive, whereas the other women is portrayed to not care about her appearance which is expected for a feminine female. The male character is wearing a suit which portrays him to be masculine as it signifies he is of a higher class or has more power. The setting of the clip looking like a space ship is very much masculine as space is associated with men. The decor of the location used is very plain and simple suggests that its masculine as a feminine decor would be very colourful, pretty and vibrant. The props used throughout such as the doctors pen shows masculinity because it represents power and shows that the male character is in control, however this could also show a feminine side because without the pen the male character would have no power, leaving him weak and powerless. The body language of the male character in a suit at the beginning of the clip comes across very confident, as this is a masculine characteristic he is portrayed to be masculine. The body language of the female character comes across both masculine and feminine in different parts of the clip. For example: when she starts to laugh at the male character in the suit she is portrayed to be masculine because she is coming across brave which is associated with masculine men. Whereas when she is told to kneel down by the male character she comes across feminine because she does at she's told. Throughout the clip personal distance is used between the characters, therefore this could suggest that the characters are not masculine enough to create intimate distance.
Representations of gender is shown through camera work. There is a low angle which is looking down on the male character, this allows the audience to see his venerability, meaning he is subordinate which is normally stereotypically portrayed through female characters as it is a feminine characteristic. An extreme close up on the female character is used during the flashback to show her struggle and fear, portraying her as feminine. However there is also a medium close up used on the female character which contrast with the extreme close up because in the close up she is shown to be confronting the male character, showing braveness and fearlessness and also power, therefore showing her to be dominate. The establishing shot at the very start of the clip allows the audience to see the setting, where the action will take place, during this establishing shot the male character is at a higher level than everyone else, due to him standing on a higher platform, looking down at everyone else. There is also a close up of the doctor in a cage, this strongly portrays him to have feminine characteristics due to the fact he is be controlled by the other male character, the doctor being in a cage represents him to be powerless.
The shot of earth can seen to be lacking in verisimilitude as it doesn't show a believable world and is not what we would steroetypically assume the earth looks like.
The representation of gender is also shown through sound. Throughout the clip diegetic, non-diegetic, asynchronous and synchronous sounds are used. The diegetic and synchronous sound used in the clip is the dialogue/speech. The deep, loud voices portray the characters as masculine, whereas the quite, sweet voices portray the characters as feminine. Also through the characters speech you can hear when they become scared or unsettled which shows a feminine side. There are a number of non-diegetic and asynchronous sounds used. For example the background music throughout the clip which changes when the atmosphere becomes tense. The exaggeration of the footsteps in the clip creates a masculine feel as it also creates a tense atmosphere, meaning something is about to happen. The sound effects used such as the ticking clock creates suspense for the audience and also the laugh which shows masculinity as it is a women laughing which shows she is brave in this situation.
Representations of gender has been shown through the use of editing. Eye-line matches are used a number of times. For example at the very beginning of the clip there is a eye-line match between the women and the man in the suit. During this eye-line match the man is shown to be masculine as he is portrayed as dominate. A flashback is also shown in the clip which uses the montage editing technique. During this flashback the women is portrayed to have a masculine role because she controlling the way people are thinking about the doctor. However just before this flashback there is a cross dissolve of the women shown to be struggling. This shows her feminine side because the stereotypical women cannot cope in tough situations. Straight cuts are also used to show one scene and then another one at a quick pace to keep the viewers attention. While the women is telling the story there is a shot reverse shot used while in conversation. The women is portrayed to be dominate as everyone is listening to her she becomes masculine.
Terminology
Realism - do the different techniques used make these piece realistic?
Verisimilitude - the construction of a believable world, bearing resemblance to real world
Stereotypes - how people are expected to be or represented in larger groupsDenotation ( or denotes) - the meaning of something eg we could see that from the empty bottles they had been drinking.Connotation ( or connotes) - the implication of that meaning eg they are all alcoholics and will die due to lover failure!
How your experiences of media consumption illustrates wider patterns and trends?
Audiences are continuously changing the way they want to consume a film. This is due to the growing technology within Production, Distribution and Exhibition. My own experiences can be seen to illustrate wider patterns and trends.
The production stage of making a film is effected by the changing ways to want to consume a film. First a large amount of audiences, including me, prefer to costume film in the cinema. The production companies would therefore make their films in 3D as many people will only be able to costume this at the cinema opposed to home cinema or download. However some audiences prefer to costume film via download, youtube and on demand. This means that the production company can film digitally which saves time and money. However this can lose the production company money as the audiences may be watching the film illegally therefore they are not paying to consume it. Going back to filming digitally, this can be seen as more consistent that filming on film as it the quality does not change no matter how many times it is costumed whereas with film the quality becomes worst. Another way in which the production stage is effected by the audience consumption is the need to make the film bigger and better. When people go to the cinema they want to have the best experience for their money. Therefore this means that the production company will need a big budget to compete with other leading films. For example 'Skyfall' was released in 2012 along with 'The Tempest' and the remake of "The rocky horror show' however due to "Skyfall' having special effect and a famous cast they did much better than the other film making $88,364,714 where as 'The rocky horror show' only made $211,243.
The changing ways to consume film had also effected the Distribution stage. Firstly the way in which the film is marketed is changed to suit where the audience will see it. For example if the audiences are consuming films in various ways the distribution companies will 360 degree marketing to ensure that the film is advertised on all levels in viewing the film. When films are viewed on video on demand websites, adverts for the website are also a way of advertising the actual film itself. For example on the Netflix advert shows clips of film such as 'transformers' and '21 jump street'. When looking at the exchange stage of a film, audiences are able to pre book cinema tickets as from experience their is risk of being unable to see the film as it may already be fully booked. Therefore this showing the exhibitors adapting to the increase in the use of internet to help with the large amount of audiences consuming films in cinema.

Case Study
Background Information
'Fox Searchlight Pictures' is the parent company to '20th Century Fox' which is part of the 'Fox Entertainment Group(a subsidiary of News Corporation)
News corporation is owned by Rupert and is the 2nd largest conglomerate in the world. It is also a mass media multinational company. Their assets are worth over $56 billion.
Although Fox searchlight Pictures are owned by a global mass market corporation, they focus on British films, horror films, dramedy and non-English language films.
Concentration of media ownership
This is the process whereby progressively fewer individuals or organisation control increasing shares of the mass media.
Research demonstrates that the media industry is already highly concentrated and dominated by a very small number of companies.
The Walt Disney Company is the largest media conglomerate in the US as of 2012.This is along with News Corporation, Time Warner and Viacom ranking in second, third and fourth.
News Corp Controversy
They are known for being a biased media organisation. They had previously given donations to the right wing American political parties.
They also had a controversial surrounding with their news outlets after hacking was used by one of their journalists.
Unlike the BBC, News Corp have subsidiaries which promote the leaders ethos and have an agenda mcuh like other propaganda.
Cross-Media Convergence and Synergy
Production:
To be part of a conglomerate means that the money for production is available for Searchlight- Bigger budgets can help to attract bigger stars and they will be able to have the newest technologies for special effects and actually shooting the film.
Film are most commonly developed by a smaller production company.
FSP can pick up a film that has already been developed and has a lot of potential.
This means working with other companies through synergistic horizontal integration
Marketing and Distribution
FSP sometime only distributes the film however when FSP markets and distributes a film they have the financial backing of major conglomerate therefore they adapt their budgets according on how well the film does in the first few weeks at the box office.
On the other hand, if films fail at the box office the loss that the FSP takes can be absorbed by News Corp.

Representation of Ability/Disability(Homework)
At the beginning of the clip there is a aerial view shot which establishes a contrast in the two characters space in their bedroom. This sense of separation is shown through mise-en-scene which shows the contrast in colour, size, tidiness and the amount of toys. A pan shows the brothers miserable face which is then followed by a close up which shows the other brother who has down syndrome. These two shots represented the disabled brother to have the more colorful and bigger part of the room.Following this there are several shot which show the parents acting differently towards their disabled son compared to their other son. A close up shot shows the able body son;s facial expression which is showing that he is aware that his disabled brother is being treated better and he doesn't like it. The medium shots shows the disabled boy as nervous as he is on the bus on his own. This is representing him to be unable to do simple task on his own as he has always had his brother there with him. During this shot there is a non-dietetic sound of narration which establishes the able body brother essentially being worried about his brother as they have been been apart before. This is representing him to actually care about his disabled brother more than he actually thinks.
There are many child like and innocent props associated with the disabled boy which is representing him to act younger than he is. When looking at the outside location, such as the activities of the able bodied boy compared to the activities of the disabled boy. For example when the able bodied boy is climbing up the tree and the disabled boy is just watching him whilst eating his ice cream. Also when the disabled boy is in the playground he appears to clutch his school bag as a sign of insecurity. In contrast to this the able bodied boy's ability is represented by an artistic drawing in the class room. The fact that he is then able to answer a question without paying much attention is representing him to have the ability to multi task.
When the deigetic soundtrack 'wouldn't it be nice' is played it is representing the able bodied boy frustration towards having a disabled brother. Also diegetic sound is used to create empathy for the disabled boy along with close ups of him on the bus juxtaposed with shallow focus, muffled diegetic sound which signifies his detachment from others and vulnerability.
There are several shot reserve shots in the family home. The position of the two main characters establishes them to be separate from one another. There is a montage of black and white evolutionary images. This montage shows the able bodied boys ability to have thoughts on an evolutionary scale.

What significance does the continuing development of digital media technology have for media institutions and audiences? You should focus on FILM but you may make reference to other media such as Music, Newspapers, Radio, Magazines or Video games
The development of digital technology includes the development of new technology, such as cameras and viral marketing. It is changing day by day which will improve the quality of films and also the way they are marketed and distributed. Although these new technologies are only available to the companies that have a big enough budget to include them in their films. For example big six companies such as Universal are able to take advantage of the technologies such as 3D as films as they have the money to invest in them and as they are a big company, they have the ability to make a profit. This example can also be applied to the Pixar and Disney’s history and use of 2D to 3D animation.
Disney released popular productions such as Dumbo with all of the animation being created by traditional hand drawn animators rather than more modern medians such as computer animations which is much quicker for the production companies and also they will be able to make more films using computer animation apposed to hand drawn animation therefore it will mean more money for the company.
Overall the development of media technology has had a positive impact on many large companies such as universal and Disney due to them being able to make 3D films and make animated films more easily and much quicker. However it can be argued that new media technologies have not been able to help all companies as they have simply been unable to afford them as they are bery expensive therefore the companies would have to reply on the films success on whether they would gain there money back in which they spent on the new technology.
![]() |
| Founded in 1986 as Pixar Animation Studios Founded By Edwin Catmull and Steve Jobs |
![]() |
| Produced By Walt Disney Distributed By RKO Radio Pictures Budget:$95,000 Gross Revenue:1.6 Million |
Also IMAX is something which has evolved due to new media technologies, this would essentially gain a larger audience which means more money for the company who owns the film.Lastly during the production of a film many special effects are applied. However due to new media technologies such as computer sofwares, special effect are able to be more advance therefore this would appeal to the audience making more people want to watch the film.
Similar to this, with new cinema releases as now distributors don’t need to process a reel of film, they just send the production file computer to computer, this also removes the limit on distribution distance as in the past, a dozen film reel would have been shared and posted around the country. Now all they need to receive a new release is an internet connection and a computer.
Technological convergence gives an advantages to the audience when having a variety of ways to consume the film. These include either at a cinema, TV, phone and tablet. These would help the company who owns the film as they will be gaining money by selling there film to all areas of technology rather than just the traditional way of a cinema. Also youtube can benefit with the institution of a film as the audience are able to view film trailers which would therefore hopefully persuade them to watch the film. This is also a cheap way of advertising a film which is always beneficial for a film company.
New technology isn't always welcomed in the media industry as it does sometimes forces a company to re-invest millions to reach the same level as their competitors, this financial risk can affect a company’s future as they may not be able to gain the money back in which they spent on changing to these new media technologies. However new technologies have made it easier and quicker to produce, distribute and exhibit a film which is always in a companies best interest so it would seem silly not to invest in new media technologies.

Homework- 18th March
Gender can be represented thought the use of camera work, mise-en-scene, sound and editing.
At the beginning of the clip there is a mid shot of the female character who can be seen with two security guards behind her, which is signifying imprisonment or that she is being held captive. Also in this mid shot she looks to the left creating an impression that she is looking at something or someone. There is then a cut to a tracking shot of the three servants who appear to be under arrest, this is shown by the uniformed guard who is holding a armed rifle. There is then a cut back to the mid shot of the women who is looking nervously ahead, the high camera angle creates a perspective of fear and not knowing. A cut to a mid shot of the master, from a low angle, this suited character has a masculine appearance to him. Masculine is being portrayed to be more powerful thought a cut following this shot which is showing the female character looking up at the master.
When looking at the doctor, he is surrounded by a radiant blue light when he changed from a fragile old man to his real self. The fact that he has become empowered shows his dominance over the other male character. This is representing masculine to be of different powers as the doctor is not more powerful that the other character who was seen as the masculine character at the beginning of the clip. The use of costume and performance is important in this extract. The humans are represented by the ordinariness of their costumes and actions. However in contrast the master is bold, smart and well presented. He is also surrounded by armed guards which is representing his gender to be more powerful and have a higher status than any other. The women in the red dress is represented as an object as she stands by his side. This is portraying her gender to powerless and nothing more than an object. For the majority of the clip, the mast is placed powerfully in the frame however when the doctor undergoes the transformation he becomes a powerful challenger to the masters powers. This is representing masculine characters to challenge each other to be the most powerful.
The exposure of the masters weapons 'tings' and the zap of the laser gun at the end of the sequence, signifies weapon like qualities. These sounds are diejectic. The pulses of music are used to signify moments of flashback. Confident is exuded by the master's voice and the dialogue is important in the function of the narrative. For example in his glee and enjoyment in destroying earth. The voice of the women is important and significantly becomes more pronounced, when the clip reveals who she really is. Her voice changes from being timid to then being more confident ans louder. This is representing her gender to have two sided to it, one being quite and one being much louder and confident when they reveal who they really are due to people under estimating her.
The pace of the extract is important at the beginning of the clip. The fact that it is slow as the female character walks towards the master, the slowness of this sequence signifies her attentions to what is happening around her. This is showing her gender to be curious of their surroundings. There are many shot reverse shots for example between master and the women. These allow the audience to see the two genders communicating and the master being more intimidating towards the beginning but this then changes to be the other way around towards the end. These shots also help keep continuity in the narrative as the plot is revealed and develops specific points of view for the audience especially in relation to the conversation between the master and the women.
Overall the women is represented as a strong women however at the beginning is timid. The fact that the women was able to save the doctor shows her inner strength compared to the masculine character. The master and the doctor are represented to be challenging each other to be the most powerful.

Homework-11th March
Sexuality can be represented through miss-en-scene, camera work, editing and sound.
A medium shot at the beginning of the clip represents the sexuality of the women behind the women looking in the mirror. We can assume that the diegetic voice over is of the women behind due to her facial expression. When she says 'She looked so beautiful' it is said with a soft gentle tone. This is representing this character to be a lesbian due to her establishing her attraction towards the other female character by complimenting her. Also the fact that it is a voice over rather than her actually saying to the other female charcater shows that she may be embarrassed of her sexuality or that the other female characters is not interested in her. This characters sexuality is further shown in a ling shot which establishes the female charcaters moving her hand in thin in above the women's body as she sleeps. That fact that she does not touch her shows that she is scared to show her sexuality and also that the other female character may not feel the same way, in a way in which she is not of the same sexuality.
Following this there is the asyncrounous sound of birds tweeting which establishes the time of day and set a relaxed atmosphere for this scene. In this scene there are several close ups showing the women, who is painting, starring at the women as if she is almost n a daze. This is showing her passion and love her this women therefore representing her sexuality as a lesbian. Lastly this is followed by a extreme close up of the women dropping the paint off of her paint brush, this is when the male character releases that she is a lesbian and become extremely angry. This could explain why she has been scared and shy about coming out about her sexuality.
We can tell that the male character is angry by a long shot of him holding the female character up against the tree. He then tries to kiss her which represents his sexuality to be heterosexual as he is showing his attraction towards the female character. However she moves away which again is representing her sexuality. Following this in the next scene you can see the lesbian women covering the quilt over her right up to her face. This is representing her emotion in a way in which she is scared to be who she is as no one around her seems to agree with it.Throughout the whole of the clip there is a piano playing, this helped set the scene as it linked to the fact that the women was hiding her sexuality as she was scared to show it. The piano sound seems to fragment when the heterosexuality character becomes angry which sets the tense atmosphere which was needed for this scene.
When looking at editing i noticed that dissolves were used to show the relationship between each of the shots. The fact that the female character is in all of the shots shot as they dissolve from one another could be representing that her feelings have not changed about her sexuality. I also noticed that there was serval eye line matches. One showing the women looking at the other women breast and another being the women looking at the other women getting undress. These are all representing her sexuality as she is obviously attracted to this women. Another eye line match can be seen when the women is looking up at the man. This is portraying him as the more dominant and powerful character out of the two of the time which may be due to her being insecure about her sexuality therefore she is shy and scared rather than dominant and powerful.
All of the female characters are wearing long covered up dresses which could be showing that they are not willing to let anyone fantasise about there body. The lighting in specific part sod the clip are very dark which gives the scenes a mysterious atmosphere which links to the fact that no one knows about the female characters sexuality which she is scared to show. Lastly the female characters body language and facial expressions shows that she does not like the male character touching her therefore representing her sexuality. The fact that he hold her up against the tree and she is unable to do anything to stop him portrays him as the more dominant character which may be due to him having nothing to hind unlike the women who is keeping her sexuality as a secret. This may be suggesting to be of this sexuality is unacceptable in this time period. The time period in which the clip is set can be seen through the costumes of the characters.
Overall the producer of this clip is representing the female characters sexuality to be a lesbian and that she is scared to come out about it as no one around seems to agree with it. Also it is representing the male characters to be heterosexual and he acts as the dominant sexuality as it seems to be accepts whereas to be a lesbian it is not accept in this specific family.

Homework
In this clip ethnicity is represented through camera shots, sound, mise en scene and editing.
The mise en scene represents a contrast between the ethnicity of the chefs through the clothes that they are wearing. All of the English chefs are wearing the white traditional chef costume where as the other ethnics are dressed in a a black chef costume. Therefore this is suggesting that there is some sort of rivalry between the different ethnicity with the kitchen.

Also at the beginning of the clip, the fact that the two men have the same colour skin suggests that they are of the same ethnicity. We can tell that Ben is shocked to see Tel by this body language and his facial expression, he also looks around to see if anyone is around as he doesn't want anyone to see him have this conversation.
Ethnicity can also be shown through sound such as dialogue. The two men at the beginning are talking about each others appearance which suggests that appearance is a important factor due to their ethnicity. Also Tel uses words such as 'bro', 'blood' and 'ganja' we is associated with a west Indian background. Tel seems to have a stronger regional accent compared to Ben who would appear to be more English. Over all we can tell that Tel has kept his ethnicity where as Ben has changed it to be appropriate for the environment that he is working in. The two women cleaners are shown to be of the same ethnic group due to them having the same accent. The fact that they are both cleaners could be suggesting that to be cleaner, it is a normal job within their ethnic group. Also the fact that they are cleaners is portraying them to be not well educated otherwise they would have a better job than a cleaner.
In a long shot, you establish the two women cleaners. This is shown by the uniform that they are wearing, However they begin to strip which obviously is not what they are meant to be doing. we see a shot of one of the cleaners face looking at the money which the man has left. This is portraying that money is more important to her than her having self respect. Also in this scene , a Chinese man is sitting on the bed, which then leads to a close up of his money which is going to pay the maids to strip with. This is representing people of a Chinese ethnicity to be wealthy enough to spend there money on what they want.
Through a over the shoulder shot during the conversation between Ben and Tel, we are able to establish that Ben is feeling uncomfortable due to his facial expression. Also in these shot we can see that Tel that dread locks which is a stereotypical west Indian hair style, in contrast to this Ben has a a closely cropped hair style which could be seen to more 'English' rather than West Indian. When Tel mention the past, we can see from a close up shot that he uncomfortable or embarrassed about his past and would rather not talk about it.

Homework- 13th Feb
“Successful media products depend as much upon marketing and distribution to a specific audience as they do upon good production practices.” To what extent would you agree with this statement, within the film area.
You may make reference to other areas in your answer. • Film • Music • Newspapers • Radio • Magazines • Video games.
You may make reference to other areas in your answer. • Film • Music • Newspapers • Radio • Magazines • Video games.
Within the film industry the importance of marketing and distribution paired with good production practices are vastly recognized and appreciated. We can witness first-hand in the film industry how production and distribution can influence a film's success, and the link between which is more important can sometimes vary from film to film. We can see, however, that both are extremely important factors for companies to take into account when trying to create a popular film.
An example of a large film company is Disney; Disney's marketing and distribution skills are incredibly vast and play a key role in contributing to the success of their films. Disney was founded in 1923 and since has produced over 158 feature films. The company grew into a popular household name when it released its first animated classics such as the Lion King and Robin Hood. These films became timeless and as the target audience is young, the stories were suitable for children across the world, Disney's 'Robin Hood' was translated into over sixteen different languages, a clear example of how wide Disney's distribution tactics have stretched.
Disney also uses a wide variety of Horizontal and Vertical marketing to ensure wide distribution of its productions. By owning their own studios, record labels, shops, clothing brands, radio stations and TV channel, Disney have a wide scope to advertise with as they own these companies, they are able to distribute through them with ease. An example of this is Disney's High School Musical, which was premiered on the Disney Channel and had its own soundtrack released. Disney also use a variety of Viral Marketing to appeal to their audience with an online presence, by doing so they can keep their young target audience up to date with new releases and teasers and are keeping their own company up to date with the developments of technologies and trends. Disney released its own fan pages on social networking sites such as Facebook for 'Loyal Followers of the Red Queen' and many other aspects of the film. By creating fan groups for films, Disney allows for an even wider audience and can use these pages to spread awareness and introduce people to the films.
Disney's 'Alice in Wonderland' is an example of a typical Disney film aimed to become hugely successful. With names of popular stars such as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton the film already creates a wave of people who want to see it just due to the people involved in the film. The budget given was $200,000,000 When comparing this to the 'King's Speech' made by Bedlam with their low budget of $15,000,000 with help in funding from the UK Film Council, we can see how even with a small budget a film can become a huge success due to its quality and production practices. We can see a clear rift between the power and wealth of the two companies, however, we can also see that this does not build a direct correlation between power and success of films as 'The King's Speech' was nominated for twelve Oscars, four of which it won, and 'Alice in Wonderland' won half this number with two Oscars.
When regarding Disney as a whole we see that it has received over two hundred Oscar nominations, but has only won just over fifty of them, when comparing this to the 'The King's Speech' alone whilst taking into account how many films Disney has made in comparison to Bedlam Productions it becomes clear that even with a vast array of marketing and distribution chains at your disposal you cannot guarantee the response to the film. Indeed marketing and distribution are highly important in getting people to want to see the film, but if the film lacks in quality then the success will be short-lived. Quality films such as 'The King's Speech' are films that become timeless through their appeal. Films such as these are living proof that although marketing and distribution is important, it can lose all of its worth once the film has left cinemas as nobody will want to see the film again or buy the DVD to a film they dislike. I therefore conclude that good production practices hold more wealth over distribution and marketing techniques as they guarantee a lasting success for a film as opposed to a short-lived one.

Homework
2) To what extent does digital distribution affect the marketing and consumption of media products in the media area you have studied? Candidates must focus on the following media areas: Film
Distribution can be divided into three stages: licencing, marketing and logistics. In 2005 this was when the distributors started to move towards digital distribution.Digital technology is seen is offer a most cost effective and logistics-light alternative to the tried and trusted 35mm print distribution.
Digital distribution betters the consumption of film.A film can be consumed via cinema or DVD. Cinemas only show a film for a short period of time due to the bettering of the logistics. Therefore films have to be sent to cinema very quickly. However due to new technology, distributors are able to do this through an electron system compared to sending a tape like they used to. This is therefore much cheaper for the distributors, On the other hand a DVD can be consumed much quicker due the cinema only showing films for a short period of time. However the making of the DVD is an expensive process.
The fact that films are sent via a electronic system this does not mean it is always safe. If the film was to become unlocked or hacked, this would then been seen illegally therefore people would not pay to see it in cinema or buy the DVD. This would leave the companies with a loss in money.
Digital distribution bettered the marketing of film as they are able to advertise films in more ways than before. For example people are able to view trailers of films on the internet via YouTube. This is opening the marketing of the film to wider audience. Therefore the film is more likely to be a success as more people will know about it.
Digital distribution can also market the film a way in which celebrities comments on the film can be recorded and played on air. This would therefore promote the film as people are easily persuaded if a celebrity they like, said that they loved the film. This would therefore gain the film more viewer and therefore more money. However someone may say a bad comment on the film therefore the film will loss viewers and money.
Overall digital distribution can help promote films to a wider audience and make it consumption a lot quicker however there is always the risk of the electronic system not working which would leave the film companies with a loss in money.

Brief synopsis of 'Harry Brown'
Harry Brown is a ex marine who lives on a estate. The estate used to be peaceful but now it will full of gangs and violence. After the death of Harry's wife, the only person that he had was his friend Lee. Lee tells Harry that he is scared of the gang and shows him a knife that he has in his coat. Later that night a fire is started in Lee's home and he knows that it is the gang. Next Harry is told that Lee is dead. All of the gang members are arrested however when they are being interviewed all they say is 'No comment' which leave the police with no evidence to arrest them for murder. During the interview this is when we learn that Noel's dad is in prison and he is just following in his footsteps. Next harry is in pub(drunk) when he reveals money in his wallet which another character sees. When Harry is walking home, the man threatens Harry with a knife and tell him to give him his money. Unexpectedly Harry stabs the man and runs away. He is mortified by what he has done so he throws all the clothes away that he had on. The police officer comes round to ask for more information about Lee as they believe that Lee was carrying the knife he was stabbed with and that the gang where defending themselves. This angers Harry as he knows that nothing will go to court like the police officers said. Then Harry goes back to Lee house and see the gang member beat up a couple so this is when he realized that he had t take matters into his own hands rather than just sit and watch this happen. Harry gradually begins to kill the members and drug supplies of the gang. When he eventually kills Noel and his uncle the whole of the estate goes back to be peaceful and the amount of crime is reduced massively. Children could play in the park and the walk through has been painted back white and has no graffiti on it.
Throughout the film, the youth are being portrayed as violent and self centred. They are also all wearing 'hoodies' which carries a connotation of bad behaviour. The lighting through out the film is natural which make it look realistic. A hand held camera is used at the beginning of the film which puts the audience in the perspective of the youth and makes it look realistic. The titles at the beginning are very small and simple. Even though Harry Brown is the main character, he name is the same size a everyone else which is representing him as the same as everyone else in society, also the fact that it is so small shows that he doesn't stand out from society despite him begin the main character. When Harry brown is in his flat, there are several close up which shows everyday activities such as making tea, wiping up crumbs, make toast and wash up. This again is representing Harry Brown as an ordinary person and he is no different from us.

Gender Homework
I
Gender can be represented through four different areas: camera shots, sound, mise-en-scene and editing.
Firstly gender is being represented through camera shots. A medium close up establishes the women wearing make-up which is suggesting that to be feminine, you take care of your appearance. This is then followed by an over the shoulder shot which is showing the male character looking down at the female character. This is then portraying masculinity to be more powerful than femininity. A medium close up then shows the other female character looking over at the women as she is unable to afford the dress. This is suggesting that feminine judge each other. The next scene in the clip starts with a a medium shot of two male characters sitting at a bar. From this shot you can see them drinking what looks like whiskey. This is then suggesting that it is masculine to drink spirits rather than feminine. Further on in the clip there is a another medium shot which shows a male character fixing something. This is then suggesting that it is a masculine job to fix things. Lastly there is a medium long shot which shows the female character wearing a backless dress which is suggesting that to be feminine you can wear revealing clothes! Also in this shot you can see the make character who is wearing a suit! This is then in comparison to the female character as he all of his body is covered up unlike the female character in the clip.

Gender can also be represented brought the use of sound. When the female character has lost her ring, an up beat asynchronous is played which is portraying feminine to become stressed quickly during situation. In comparison when the male character gives the female character a solution, the asynchronous sound become more gentle and relaxed! This so therefore portraying masculine to be relaxed and calm during situation like in the clip.
Gender can be represented through mise-en-scene. The male characters are wearing suits which is portraying masculine to be more powerful than femine. However one of the female characters are wearing a suit which could be suggesting that she is just as powerful as the masculine characters. Also the fact that both female characters are looking for new clothes to make them look good is suggesting that to be feminine you like to take care in what you look like and are always out to impress. The setting of the clip is in women's dress shop, this is portraying a femine. atmosphere therefore it is calm and relaxed.
Lastly gender can be shown through editing. An eyeline match shows the female character looking up at the male character. Therefore this is suggesting that feminine figures look up to masculine figures and also they masculine in more powerful than feminine.
Overall gender is being shown in various ways to suggest the different elements of masculine and feminine

The history of British film
Early history of British film
- The cinema as an entertainment industry emerged from a series of innovations in the late nineteenth century, mostly in the United States, France and the United Kingdom.
- In the UK, filmmakers established small studios to produce short films for use by travelling showmen and in music-halls.
- In the first decade of the twentieth century, more than 30 film studios were established in and around London.
- British films rapidly established a substantial share of the market at home and abroad, including some 15 per cent of the American market by 1910
- This initial success rapidly faded as American production took off with expensive and heavily marketed feature films
- Film production was waning, cinema going flourished as a pastime of the British public
- In 1908 investment in cinemas surged, with the finding of many new companies wiht investment of £1.5m (£140m at current prices)
- The Government recognized the potential of the film industry, initially as a source of revenue, when it included cinema, together with other entertainments, such as music hall and theatre, in the Entertainment Tax, introduced in 1916.
- The rate, which was initially set at between 25 and 50 per cent of the price of cinema tickets, was reduced in the 1920s and then raised during the Second World War however it was finally abolished in 1960
First Government support
- By 1925, British film production had declined
- Fewer than 40 feature films a year were being made, compared with over 150 in 1920.
- The vast majority films shown here were American.
- May 1925, lord Newton raised the issue in the house of lords, 'industrial, commercial, educational and imperial interests'.
- In 1927, the government recognized the importance of film production to the British economy.
- The Cinematograph Films Act 1927 recognized the interdependency of production, distribution and exhibition, and sought to encourage home production by setting quotas for British-made films to be met by both distributors and exhibitors.
- The act was successful in the sense that production of films in the UK doubled.
- It also established several new production companies, including British international Pictures at new studios in Elstree, Warner studios at Teddington and Fox's studios at Wemberly.
The challenging of American film export
- The Government was quick to recognise the domestic importance of the film industry
- the American authorities were even quicker to recognise its importance as an export industry
- American missions abroad were reporting on foreign film market opportunities as early as the 1910s.
- In 1926, Congress appropriated $15,000 to set up the Motion Picture Section within the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce of the Department of Commerce
- This collected market information through 44 foreign offices and 300 consular offices.
- The section also appointed a trade commissioner in Europe.
- Harvard business school started to offer seminar series in the business and management of the film industry and several other American business schools and universities followed.
- Domestically the film industry was responsible for about 2 percent of overall US.
- The hollywood studios generally broke even on the American market and derived their profits from export revenues.
The 1930's boom and bust
- The arrival of "talkies" in 1928 had a positive effect on British film production.
- Their films were projected in the home market and, unlike the French and German film industries, able to compete with American sound films without the need for dubbing.
- The result was that the industry experienced a boom.
- The most successful British film production company was London Film Productions, founded by an immigrant from Hungary, Alexander Korda.
- By the late 1930s, the boom in British film production came to a sudden end.
