INITIAL THOUGHTS:
My initial thoughts on this Regional Identity clip is that there is a clear representation of a rural area however you are able to see the two different lifestyles of people living in in the rural area. The stereotypical rural representation is being shown at the start by the man and the woman's clothing, their posh accent and words they use. However when you got further in to the clip rural is being shown to be small and have a lack of facilities but also very busy and loud by loads of people rushing down the stairs. This element is challenging the stereotype of a rural place as they would not normally be seen as busy and loud as these are stereotypes of urban places such as the city
CAMERA SHOTS:
At the start of the clip there is an over the shoulder shot which allows you to establish what both characters are wearing on their top half of their body. The women is wearing a little white hat and had minimal makeup on and the man is wearing a suit. This is showing rural to be traditional and pure. Also in the over the shoulder shot you can see some of the background of the room. There appears to be various picture frames on the wall which are old fashioned which is suggesting rural to be traditional and old fashioned.
In this medium long shot you can establish what the women is wearing. The all black long dress appears to be very traditional which is the stereotype of a rural women. She also looks to be cleaning the clothes with a large bucket of water. This is a very traditional way of cleaning however it could be seen as a cheap and poor way which essentially challenges the stereotype of a rural woman as they are not necessarily seen as poor. Although the fact that it is a women cleaning confirms the stereotype of a rural women as there lifestyle is revolved around doing house work.
EDITING:
There is an eye line match between the man and women at the beginning of the clip. The man is looking down at the women which is suggesting that in the rural lifestyle the man has more authority over the women in the relationship.
SOUND:
You can also hear a train in the background which is an asynchronous sound. This sound would usually relate to an urban place however it sounds like a steam train which is old fashioned and would make more sense to be in a rural place rather than an urban place.
Although throughout most of the clip there is narrator, you are continuously able to hear footsteps which is suggest this place to fairly busy.
MISE-EN-SCENE:
Throughout the whole clip there are elements which suggest a rural place. These are things such as small roads, small buildings, old fashioned photo frames and all of the scenery being very gloomy and dull.
The clothes that the characters are wearing are a massive indicator to the regional identity. All the women have hat of some sort to cover their head and are covered from head to toe. This is suggest rural women to have a lot of self respect. The man at the start of the clip is very well dress with a suit on. This is suggesting rural men to want to look smart and respectful.
When the women is washing the clothes in a pot and all the clothes are hanging across the road, this showing the traditional elements which is being suggested in the rural place This could also be showing the lack of facilities there are. Also the cleaning is being done by a women which confirms the stereotype of a rural women as they are know to be house wives.
When loads of people rush down the stairs it appears to only be men which is suggesting that in this area men are the ones who go to work to earn money for the family.
Overall there are many representations of rural however the fact that it sometimes appears busy and rushed, the stereotype of rural is challenge and is almost showing the urban lifestyle.
