Representation of Ability/Disability(Homework)

At the beginning of the clip there is a aerial view shot which establishes a contrast in the two characters space in their bedroom. This sense of separation is shown through mise-en-scene which shows the contrast in colour, size, tidiness and the amount of toys. A pan shows the brothers miserable face which is then followed by a close up which shows the other brother who has down syndrome. These two shots represented the disabled brother to have the more colorful and bigger part of the room.Following this there are several shot which show the parents acting differently towards their disabled son compared to their other son. A close up shot shows the able body son;s facial expression which is showing that he is aware that his disabled brother is being treated better and he doesn't like it. The medium shots shows the disabled boy as nervous as he is on the bus on his own. This is representing him to be unable to do simple task on his own as he has always had his brother there with him. During this shot there is a non-dietetic sound of narration which establishes the able body brother essentially being worried about his brother as they have been been apart before. This is representing him to actually care about his disabled brother more than he actually thinks.

There are many child like and innocent props associated with the disabled boy which is representing him to act younger than he is. When looking at the outside location, such as the activities of the able bodied boy compared to the activities of the disabled boy. For example when the able bodied boy is climbing up the tree and the disabled boy is just watching him whilst eating his ice cream. Also when the disabled boy is in the playground he appears to clutch his school bag as a sign of insecurity. In contrast to this the able bodied boy's ability is represented by an artistic drawing in the class room. The fact that he is then able to answer a question without paying much attention is representing him to have the ability to multi task.

When the deigetic soundtrack 'wouldn't it be nice' is played it is representing the able bodied boy frustration towards having a disabled brother. Also diegetic sound is used to create empathy for the disabled boy along with close ups of him on the bus juxtaposed with shallow focus, muffled diegetic sound which signifies his detachment from others and vulnerability.

There are several shot reserve shots in the family home. The position of the two main characters establishes them to be separate from one another. There is a montage of black and white evolutionary images. This montage shows the able bodied boys ability to have thoughts on an evolutionary scale.

homework 20th march

What significance does the continuing development of digital media technology have for media institutions and audiences? You should focus on FILM but you may make reference to other media such as Music, Newspapers, Radio, Magazines or Video games

Founded in 1986 as
 Pixar Animation Studios

Founded By Edwin Catmull
and Steve Jobs
The development of digital technology includes the development of new technology, such as cameras and viral marketing. It is changing day by day which will improve the quality of films and also the way they are marketed and distributed. Although these new technologies are only available to the companies that have a big enough budget to include them in their films. For example big six companies such as Universal are able to take advantage of the technologies such as 3D as films as they have the money to invest in them and as they are a big company, they have the ability to make a profit. This example can also be applied to the Pixar and Disney’s history and use of 2D to 3D animation.

Produced By Walt Disney
Distributed By RKO Radio Pictures

Budget:$95,000
Gross Revenue:1.6 Million

Disney released popular productions such as Dumbo with all of the animation being created by traditional hand drawn animators rather than more modern medians such as computer animations which is much quicker for the production companies and also they will be able to make more films using computer animation apposed to hand drawn animation therefore it will mean more money for the company.

Also IMAX is something which has evolved due to new media technologies, this would essentially gain a larger audience which means more money for the company who owns the film.Lastly during the production of a film many special effects are applied. However due to new media technologies such as computer sofwares, special effect are able to be more advance therefore this would appeal to the audience making more people want to watch the film.

IMAX is a motion picture film format and a set of cinema
projection standards created by the Candian company
IMAX Cooperation and developed by Graeme Ferguson,
Roman kroitor, Robert Kerr and William C.
This is a reel of film which
is what would be traditionally
used to make a film however
digital filming is more commonly
used as you are able to see if
you the perfect shoot whereas
on a reel you are unable until it has
been produced. This therefore saves
time.
Similar to this, with new cinema releases as now distributors don’t need to process a reel of film, they just send the production file computer to computer, this also removes the limit on distribution distance as in the past, a dozen film reel would have been shared and posted around the country. Now all they need to receive a new release is an internet connection and a computer.
Technological convergence gives an advantages to the audience when having a variety of ways to consume the film. These include either at a cinema, TV, phone and tablet. These would help the company who owns the film as they will be gaining money by selling there film to all areas of technology rather than just the traditional way of a cinema. Also youtube can benefit with the institution of a film as the audience are able to view film trailers which would therefore hopefully persuade them to watch the film. This is also a cheap way of advertising a film which is always beneficial for a film company.

New technology isn't always welcomed in the media industry as it does sometimes forces a company to re-invest millions to reach the same level as their competitors, this financial risk can affect a company’s future as they may not be able to gain the money back in which they spent on changing to these new media technologies. However new technologies have made it easier and quicker to produce, distribute and exhibit a film which is always in a companies best interest so it would seem silly not to invest in new media technologies.

Overall the development of media technology has had a positive impact on many large companies such as universal and Disney due to them being able to make 3D films and make animated films more easily and much quicker. However it can be argued that new media technologies have not been able to help all companies as they have simply been unable to afford them as they are bery expensive therefore the companies would have to reply on the films success on whether they would gain there money back in which they spent on the new technology.

Homework- 18th March

Gender can be represented thought the use of camera work, mise-en-scene, sound and editing.

At the beginning of the clip there is a mid shot of the female character who can be seen with two security guards behind her, which is signifying imprisonment or that she is being held captive. Also in this mid shot she looks to the left creating an impression that she is looking at something or someone. There is then a cut to a tracking shot of the three servants who appear to be under arrest, this is shown by the uniformed  guard who is holding a armed rifle. There is then a cut back to the mid shot of the women who is looking nervously ahead, the high camera angle creates a perspective of fear and not knowing. A cut to a mid shot of the master, from a low angle, this suited character has a masculine appearance to him. Masculine is being portrayed to be more powerful thought a cut following this shot which is showing the female character looking up at the master.

When looking at the doctor, he is surrounded by a radiant blue light when he changed from a fragile old man to his real self. The fact that he has become empowered shows his dominance over the other male character. This is representing masculine to be of different powers as the doctor is not more powerful that the other character who was seen as the masculine character at the beginning of the clip. The use of costume and performance is important in this extract. The humans are represented by the ordinariness of their costumes and actions. However in contrast the master is bold, smart and well presented. He is also surrounded by armed guards which is representing his gender to be more powerful and have a higher status than any other. The women in the red dress is represented as an object as she stands by his side. This is portraying her gender to powerless and nothing more than an object. For the majority of the clip, the mast is placed powerfully in the frame however when the doctor undergoes the transformation he becomes a powerful challenger to the masters powers. This is representing masculine characters to challenge each other to be the most powerful.

The exposure of the masters weapons 'tings' and the zap of the laser gun at the end of the sequence, signifies weapon like qualities. These sounds are diejectic. The pulses of music are used to signify moments of flashback. Confident is exuded by the master's voice and the dialogue is important in the function of the narrative. For example in his glee and enjoyment in destroying earth. The voice of the women is important and significantly becomes more pronounced, when the clip reveals who she really is. Her voice changes from being timid to then being more confident ans louder. This is representing her gender to have two sided to it, one being quite and one being much louder and confident when they reveal who they really are due to people under estimating her.

The pace of the extract is important at the beginning of the clip. The fact that it is slow as the female character walks towards the master, the slowness of this sequence signifies her attentions to what is happening around her. This is showing her gender to be curious of their surroundings. There are many shot reverse shots for example between master and the women. These allow the audience to see the two genders communicating and the master being more intimidating towards the beginning but this then changes to be the other way around towards the end. These shots also help keep continuity in the narrative as the plot is revealed and develops specific points of view for the audience especially in relation to the conversation between the master and the women.

Overall the women is represented as a strong women however at the beginning is timid. The fact that the women was able to save the doctor shows her inner strength compared to the masculine character. The master and the doctor are represented to be challenging each other to be the most powerful.

Homework-11th March

Sexuality can be represented through miss-en-scene, camera work, editing and sound.

A medium shot at the beginning of the clip represents the sexuality of the women behind the women looking in the mirror. We can assume that the diegetic voice over is of the women behind due to her facial expression. When she says 'She looked so beautiful' it is said with a soft gentle tone. This is representing this character to be a lesbian due to her establishing her attraction towards the other female character by complimenting her. Also the fact that it is a voice over rather than her actually saying to the other female charcater shows that she may be embarrassed of her sexuality or that the other female characters is not interested in her. This characters sexuality is further shown in a ling shot which establishes the female charcaters moving her hand in thin in above the women's body as she sleeps. That fact that she does not touch her shows that she is scared to show her sexuality and also that the other female character may not feel the same way, in a way in which she is not of the same sexuality.

Following this there is the asyncrounous sound of birds tweeting which establishes the time of day and set a relaxed atmosphere for this scene. In this scene there are several close ups showing  the women, who is painting, starring at the women as if she is almost n a daze. This is showing her passion and love her this women therefore representing her sexuality as a lesbian. Lastly this is followed by a extreme close up of the women dropping the paint off of her paint brush, this is when the male character releases that she is a lesbian and become extremely angry. This could explain why she has been scared and shy about coming out about her sexuality.

We can tell that the male character is angry by a long shot of him holding the female character up against the tree. He then tries to kiss her which represents his sexuality to be heterosexual as he is showing his attraction towards the female character. However she moves away which again is representing her sexuality. Following this in the next scene you can see the lesbian women covering the quilt over her right up to her face. This is representing her emotion in a way in which she is scared to be who she is as no one around her seems to agree with it.Throughout the whole of the clip there is a piano playing, this helped set the scene as it linked to the fact that the women was hiding her sexuality as she was scared to show it. The piano sound seems to fragment when the heterosexuality character becomes angry which sets the tense atmosphere which was needed for this scene.

When looking at editing i noticed that dissolves were used to show the relationship between each of the shots. The fact that the female character is in all of the shots shot as they dissolve from one another could be representing that her feelings have not changed about her sexuality. I also noticed that there was serval eye line matches. One showing the women looking at the other women breast and another being the women looking at the other women getting undress. These are all representing her sexuality as she is obviously attracted to this women. Another eye line match can be seen when the women is looking up at the man. This is portraying him as the more dominant and powerful character out of the two of the time which may be due to her being insecure about her sexuality therefore she is shy and scared rather than dominant and powerful.

All of the female characters are wearing long covered up dresses which could be showing that they are not willing to let anyone fantasise about there body. The lighting in specific part sod the clip are very dark which gives the scenes a mysterious atmosphere which links to the fact that no one knows about the female characters sexuality which she is scared to show. Lastly the female characters body language and facial expressions shows that she does not like the male character touching her therefore representing her sexuality. The fact that he hold her up against the tree and she is unable to do anything to stop him portrays him as the more dominant character which may be due to him having nothing to hind unlike the women who is keeping her sexuality as a secret. This may be suggesting to be of this sexuality is unacceptable in this time period. The time period in which the clip is set can be seen through the costumes of the characters.

Overall the producer of this clip is representing the female characters sexuality to be a lesbian and that she is scared to come out about it as no one around seems to agree with it. Also it is representing the male characters to be heterosexual and he acts as the dominant sexuality as it seems to be accepts whereas to be a lesbian it is not accept in this specific family.
